The Maltese Falcon flew over Lynchburg! Beginning in mid-January, Amazement Square and the Lynchburg College Library celebrated Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon with a series of programs for adults, teens and children including: a film noir festival, book discussions, contests, events and more. Free copies of the book were available at the museum and other locations throughout Lynchburg. The twists and turns began with a Maltese Mystery Day at Amazement Square on January 16th with a special reduced admission rate of $3 all day.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature to the lives of its citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read Lynchburg was hosted by Amazement Square, The Rightmire Children’s Museum, in partnership with the Lynchburg College Library, in order to encourage the Lynchburg community to make reading a part of daily life. Research shows that people who read regularly are more likely to attend arts and sports events, to volunteer, and are generally more engaged citizens. At the same time, research has also shown that fewer and fewer people of all ages and backgrounds are choosing to read for fun. With this in mind, The Big Read Lynchburg was a community-wide, all-encompassing reading event, designed to get our community back to books.
